'Eternity' Movie Review

Released: November 26th, 2025

Watched: December 6th, 2025

'Eternity', directed by David Freyne and written by David Freyne and Pat Cunnane, is about one lucky woman, Elizabeth Olsen's "Joan", passing into the afterlife and immediately being confronted by her current husband, Miles Teller's "Larry", and previous husband, Callum Turner's "Luke", about who she wants to spend the rest of her eternity™ with.

I didn't have any expectations heading into the movie, really the only reason I decided to see it was for the simple fact that I've enjoyed Olsen and Teller's performances in the past. That being said, I very much enjoyed the experience! The set design was phenomenal, I loved the variety of color in both the eternity holding area as well as the costumes. The fact that the main three had New England accents throughout the movie only made the various arguments more amusing.

My largest gripe with the movie may be that the final choice that our female lead makes is, in my opinion, the only logical choice to make.

*Spoilers*

The choice Joan had to make in the movie was who she wants to spend an eternity with; her first husband Luke, who she only knew for a few years when she was younger and who died in the Korean War, or her current husband Larry who she met two years after and was married to for 65 years. If you think like me, there's an immediate and obvious problem that leads to an obvious conclusion. There's an entire lifetime's worth of an experience gap between Joan and Luke. They are entirely different people from when they knew each other, with entirely different wants and desires. If she were to choose one of them, Larry would be the only logical choice.

To the writers' credit, they do attempt to make the ending more ambiguous. There's a moment where it appears that Joan will choose to spend eternity without either husband, then Larry notices a very specific detail about Joan and convinces her to stay with Luke. After spending a while with Luke, Joan realizes that Larry actually the person who understands her enough to be able to stand her for eternity.

Overall, I think 'Eternity' is an enjoyable film that is definitely worth paying for if you're a fan of Rom-Coms, and worth catching on streaming if/when it's released there.

7.4/10
