'The Housemaid' Movie Review

Released: December 19th, 2025

Watched: January 17th, 2026

There were a lot of hot people in this movie, that's probably the greatest strength of the film. To be a little more fair, Amanda Seyfried puts on a genuinely impressive performance as "Nina Winchester" and Brandon Sklenar is pretty good as "Andrew Winchester". For the most part, this movie is weighed down by the fact that Sydney Sweeny is just not very good. Which sucks when the majority of the movie is focused on her character. She's very flat for most of the runtime and doesn't show a convincing range of emotions despite the absolutely wild situations she was put into.

I also feel that 'The Housemaid' fails to consistently deliver on one of the main draws this film has: sexual tension. The first true bit of sexual tension the movie develops is during a dinner scene between Sweeney and Sklenar. However they immediately kill that tension with a moment with Sweeney's phone, and then they have sex anyways. Maybe I'm a prude but I don't think Sweeney's character would have exactly been in the mood in that moment.

The ending also left a poor taste in my mouth. The idea of a rich man doing fucked up torture crimes and getting away with it through sheer charm and wealth is a proven fact. The idea of a poor young woman who has previously committed violent crimes being connected to the suspicious deaths of multiple rich and well-connected men without consequence is a bridge too far for me. As soon as a second the guy drop wealthy families feeling class solidarity are deep diving into this mysterious woman and finding a way to remove her or lock her up unfortunately.

Overall, maybe worth a watch on streaming or other means if you really like Seyfried or really want to see Sweeney's naked body at new angles. I personally would not recommend spending money to specifically see 'The Housemaid'.

3.3/10
